Poll: Majority Of Russians Back Internet Censorship

Almost two-thirds of Russians are in favor of Internet censorship to restrict harmful online content.

A poll released by the independent Levada Center shows that 63 percent of respondents say censorship is necessary due to the "numerous dangerous sites and materials" online, while only 19 percent said the dangers of the Internet are exaggerated and censorship is not acceptable.

Seventeen percent of respondents were undecided.

New Russian legislation is due to come into force in November under which content deemed dangerous by the government will have to be removed from the Internet.
