Navalny Could Be Excluded From Moscow Mayoral Election

Moscow mayoral candidate Aleksei Navalny

Moscow's city election commission chief says officials are looking into alleged campaign violations by opposition mayoral candidate Aleksei Navalny that could disqualify him from running in next month's voting.

Commission chairman Valentin Gorbunov said Thursday the commission was checking into complaints Navalny had violated regulations by distributing materials that were not paid for by the candidate's campaign fund.

Gorbunov said the election commission might, "in the near future," consider annulling Navalny's registration to run for mayor.

Navalny responded on his Twitter account, saying the election commission comments show that a second round run-off in the mayoral election is "inevitable."

Incumbent Mayor Sergei Sobyanin is leading in the polls, but there would be a run-off between the top two candidates if no one wins more than 50 percent of the vote.
