A few hundred people gathered on October 7 at Moscow's Pushkin Square to hold a protest rally in support of jailed Kremlin foe Aleksei Navalny. Protesters were chanting "Putin is a thief!" "Happy Birthday!" "Russia without Putin!" and "Freedom to Navalny!" Police in Moscow have reportedly thus far been unprecedentedly restrained. The protests in Moscow, St. Petersburg, and other cities across the country were timed to take place on President Vladimir Putin's 65th birthday. (RFE/RL's Russian Service)
