MOSCOW -- Moscow's top archaeologist was pelted with eggs today by activists promoting freedom of assembly, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The incident took place at a gathering in Moscow at which Leonid Kondrashev was to display objects found by archaeologists during excavations on the city's Triumph Square.

An RFE/RL correspondent reports that several men and women threw eggs and mayonnaise at Kondrashev, shouting "Freedom of assembly always and everywhere!"

Triumph Square is where activists of the so-called Strategy 31 campaign usually hold their meetings. The campaign solicits public support for Article 31 of the Russian Constitution, which guarantees freedom of assembly, and holds it protests on the last day of months that have 31 days.

In September, Moscow officials cordoned off Triumph Square on the grounds that archeological excavations were under way there.
