The Russian ambassador to Ankara was shot dead in an attack at an art gallery in the Turkish capital. Reuters quoted a Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, who confirmed the death of envoy Andrei Karlov after the incident on December 19. Reports said he was shot by a gunman shouting: "This payback is for Aleppo," referring to the Syrian city which has been under heavy attack by Russian and Syrian forces.
