Yulia Tymoshenko's appeals hearing opened today in Kyiv, but the former Ukrainian prime minister was not able to attend due to health problems.

The Kyiv Court of Appeals is considering Tymoshenko's request to overturn her conviction on charges of abuse of office when she was prime minister.

Oleksandr Turchinov, the deputy leader of Tymoshenko's Batkivshchina party, told journalists outside the court that Tymoshenko's health "has deteriorated significantly."

Tymoshenko's lawyers say she is suffering from severe back pain and is unable to walk.

Supporters say she is being denied proper medical treatment in prison.
