Ukrainian Officials Checking Election Loser's Complaints

Ukrainian presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych (file photo) Kyiv, 10 January 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Ukrainian officials are considering complaints by presidential candidate Viktor Yanukovych two weeks after the rerun presidential election on 26 December.

Preliminary official results show opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko won the election with 52 percent of the vote, while Yanukovych had 41 percent.

Yanukovych has filed several complaints concerning the poll. Top Ukrainian legal and election officials have so far thrown out most of those complaints.

The head of Yanukovych's campaign staff says Yanukovych is still working on more appeals. Earlier today, officials said the election commission was expected to announce the final official results of the presidential election by the end of the day.
