USAID Denies Funding Kazakh Opposition

28 January 2005 -- The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) is denying allegations from Kazakh officials that it is funding Kazakhstan's political opposition.

Speaking yesterday at a press conference in Kazakhstan's commercial capital Almaty, the outgoing head of the USAID Mission in Central Asia, George Deikun, said USAID is not financing political parties.

Deikun said USAID is working on the development of political parties by providing them only with training.

Deikun's remarks come after Kazakh parliamentarian Yerasyl Abylkashymov accused the United States of providing more than $40 million to Kazakh opposition figures through various funds and nongovernmental organizations over the past several years.
