Pro-Russian Opposition Supporters Rally In Kyiv

(RFE/RL) 1 December 2005 -- Supporters of pro-Russian opposition groups rallied today in Kyiv to protest Ukraine's goal of joining NATO and the European Union.

Media reports said about 1,000 supporters of the Progressive Socialist Party (PSPU) gathered on Kyiv's Independence Square. Party leader Nataliya Vitrenko told the crowd that Ukrainians should say "no" to NATO and the EU.

Hundreds of supporters from PSPU and other left-wing groups also staged a protest in a second Kyiv square.

Supporters of the radical pro-Russian opposition group Bratsvo (Brotherhood) early today picketed outside the presidential administration building.

The protests were staged as a Ukraine-EU summit was under way in the capital.
