Kyrgyz Lawmakers Elect New Speaker


Marat Sultanov, the new speaker of the Kyrgyz parliament (RFE/RL) BISHKEK, March 2, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyz lawmakers today elected a new speaker of parliament, Marat Sultanov.


Sultanov was elected with the support of 45 parliamentarians. He needed the support of 38 members of parliament. Fourteen voted against Sultanov.


The former speaker of parliament, Omurbek Tekebaev, resigned on February 27 after a fallout with President Kurmanbek Bakiev.
