Kazakhs Consider Extradition Of Ethnic Chechen To Russia

May 30, 2006 (RFE/RL) -- Kazakh authorities say they are considering Russia's request to extradite a Russian national of Chechen origin over his alleged involvement in attacks in Ingushetia, RFE/RL's Kazakh Service reported.

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) accuses Zelimkhan Sampiyev of taking part in a 2004 raid against the Interior Ministry building in Ingushetia. Several people were killed in that attack.

Islam Bekishev, a spokesman for the Kazakh National Security Committee, today told RFE/RL's Kazakh Service that Sampiyev is currently detained in Kazakhstan. He said Russia and Kazakhstan are in the process of exchanging the documents needed to carry out the extradition.

The 2004 raid on the ministry building was part of a series of coordinated militant attacks on government and police buildings. Scores of people were killed or wounded.
