Montenegro Calls Elections For September

Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic (file photo) (RFE/RL) July 11, 2006 -- Montenegrin President Filip Vujanovic today called a general election for September 10, the country's first vote as a fully independent state.

The former Yugoslav republic voted in May to dissolve its union with Serbia.

Elections to the country's 75-seat parliament, which existed prior to the referendum, had been planned for the autumn regardless of the result of the referendum.
