Iraq Asks UN To Stay

UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in Baghdad in November 2005 (AFP) August 8, 2006 -- The Iraqi Foreign Ministry today said it has asked the United Nations to renew its mandate in the country for another year.

Last week, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan recommended that the mandate, which is due to expire on August 11, should be renewed.

The UN has been helping Iraq set up a government and judiciary, and has been providing legal, social, and humanitarian assistance.
