Explosions Rock Ukraine Arms Depot

(RFE/RL) August 20, 2006 -- Ukrainian authorities say at least four people have been injured by a series of explosions at a military ammunition depot in the Zaporizhya region of southern Ukraine.

Officials said the explosions, which continued into early today, had been triggered by a fire. The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

The Defense Ministry said the injured included two soldiers and two other people.

Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Klyuev said some 1,500 civilians had been evacuated from around the village of Novobogdanovka, and 4,000 others were sent temporarily to shelters.

Explosions at the same base in May 2004 continued for nearly a week and killed five people.
