Tajikistan Marks Independence Anniversary


The celebrations today included this military parade (RFE/RL) September 9, 2006 -- Tajikistan is celebrating 15 years of independence today.


In the capital, Dushanbe, performances are scheduled that feature some of the country's most popular artists.


President Imomali Rakhmonov was among the many people attending a military parade earlier today.


There was civil war in Tajikistan from 1992 to 1997. The country has struggled to recover from the conflict that left up to 100,000 people dead and ruined Tajikistan's infrastructure.
