Fifth Arrest Over Kazakh Mine Blast

(RFE/RL) October 19, 2006 -- Prosecutors in Kazakhstan's central Qaraghandy Region today said a fifth coal mine employee has been arrested over a gas explosion that claimed 41 lives last month.

The Kazakhstan Today news agency reports the man was taken into custody on October 14.

The other four detainees have all been charged with negligence.

The mine where the underground blast occurred on September 20 belongs to a subsidiary of Arcelor Mittal, the world's leading steel producer.
