Agrarian Party May Merge With Nazarbaev's Party

Kazakh President Nazarbaev (file photo) (RFE/RL) November 15, 2006 -- Kazakhstan's Agrarian Party today said it is considering merging with Otan (Fatherland), the political grouping that is President Nursultan Nazarbaev's power base.

A statement posted on Nazarbaev's website said the idea was discussed during talks he had today with Agrarian Party Chairman Romin Madinov.

Addressing reporters after the meeting, Madinov said the issue would be put on the agenda of the next Agrarian Party's congress.

Asar (All Together), the political grouping of Nazarbaev's daughter Darigha, merged with Otan in July. The Civic Party of Kazakhstan made a similar move on November 10.

With a membership of nearly one million, Otan is by far Kazakhstan's largest political party.

Kazakhstan has a population of some 15 million.
