Azerbaijani Opposition Backers Protest Price Hikes

Musavat party activists in Baku today (RFE/RL) January 28, 2007 -- More than 1,000 opposition supporters rallied in the Azerbaijani capital, Baku, today to protest the price increases for gas, electricity, and gasoline announced earlier this month.

During the rally, the leader of the Musavat opposition party, Isa Gambar, accused the government of diverting the nation's oil and gas revenues.

The Baku municipal authorities had authorized the two-hour protest.
