Satybaldiev To Be Acting Kyrgyz Prosecutor-General

Kyrgyz President Kurmanbek Bakiev (file photo) (RFE/RL) March 21, 2007 (RFE/RL) -- Kyrgyzstan's presidential press service says Elmurza Satybaldiev will temporarily hold the post of acting prosecutor-general, RFE/RL’s Kyrgyz Service reported.

President Kurmanbek Bakiev appointed Satybaldiyev as acting prosecutor-general on March 20, but officials said he later revoked the decree making the appointment, because Satybaldiev did not fulfill the criteria for the position. Today’s announcement confirms that Satybaldiev will take the post temporarily.

Former Prosecutor-General Kambaraly Kongantiev was dismissed from his post on March 19. Kyrgyz opposition and human rights activists had been calling for his dismissal.

The calls came in connection with the deportations of Uzbek refugees last year, the investigation into the 2002 Aksy tragedy in which security forces killed six protesters, and poor performance in corruption cases involving relatives of former President Askar Akaev.
