Russia Asks France To Explain Chechen Envoy's Visit


Ahmed Zakayev was in France earlier thsi week (file) (CTK) June 29, 2007 --  Russia is seeking explanations for France's decision to allow Chechen separatist envoy Akhmed Zakayev to travel to Strasbourg.


Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Zakayev's French trip raised "serious questions."


Zakayev, who has political asylum in Britain, attended a June 27 meeting of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, a human rights and democracy body based in Strasbourg.


Moscow claims Zakayev has been involved in terrorist attacks.
