Chechen Leader's Widow Says She'll Vote For Yeltsin

Moscow, June 5 (RFE/RL) -- The widow of Chechen rebel leader Dzhokhar Dudayev says she will vote for Boris Yeltsin in this month's Russian presidential elections.

Alla Dudayeva told reporters today during a women's conference in Moscow that Yeltsin is serious about bringing peace to Chechnya. Interfax quotes Dudayeva as saying that the support of Yeltsin means the support of liberty and democracy in Russia.

Earlier this month, Dudayeva was arrested by Russian security forces in Nalchik, the capital of the southern russian republic of Kabardino-Balkaria, after she tried to board a plane to Turkey. Russian news agencies said she was travelling under a false passport. She was released after an order issued by Yeltsin.

Dzhokhar Dudayev was killed in April, reportedly by a Russian rocket attack.
