Iran-Afghan Economic Cooperation Meeting

Kabul, June 6 (RFE/RL) -- Iran's deputy Foreign Minister Allauddin Broujerdi has announced that the first Iran-Afghan joint economic commission meeting will be held in Teheran next week.

In Kabul yesterday, Broujerdi also said he had met in northern Afghanistan with Afghan faction leader Abdul Rashid Dostam to try to persuade him to participate in intra-Afghan peace talks. The Iranian official's visit, the fourth this year, follows a peace accord signed by Afghanistan's President Burhanuddin Rabbani with his former rival Gulbuddin Hekmetyar late last month.

Iran had help negotiate the accord. Broujerdi also plans talks with other Afghan faction leaders. As part of efforts to have all factions participate in talks, Iran has also arranged talks with the Islamist Taleban group.
