Dushanbe, June 11 (RFE/RL) -- The United
Nations Secretary-General's special envoy on Tajikistan, Gerd
Dietrich Merrem, says he believes each side in the Tajikistan
conflict is "very much interested in effectively restoring a
ceasefire."
Merrem confirmed in an interview with RFE/RL that the Tajik government and opposition have been invited to resume their stalled peace talks next week, probably June 17. But the government has expressed reservations about being able to resume talks at that time. The talks are expected to be held again in Ashgabat.
A ceasefire that has been routinely extended has not been honored generally, and fighting continues in the Tavildara region.
