Moscow, June 13 (RFE/RL) -- Russian President Boris Yeltsin has condemned the murder of Viktor Mosalov, the mayor of the town of Zhukovsky near Moscow. Yeltsin called it a terrorist act aimed at intimidating people on the eve of presidential elections.
In a message of condolence today to members of Mosalov's family published by Itar-Tass, Yeltsin said the attack is also aimed at sowing fear, creating panic and undermining public order. He says those behind Mosalov's murder are trying to break what he terms the fragile public accord which is taking shape in Russia..
Police say Mosalov was killed by several gunshots to the head. A neighbor discovered his body this morning near the staircase of the mayor's apartment. A spokesman for the Moscow regional police says no motives for the murder have yet been established.
Zhukovsky, about 20 kilometers east of Moscow, is a center of the Russian aerospace industry.
