Moscow, July 16 (RFE/RL) -- U.S. Vice President Al Gore held a 45-minute meeting with Russian President Boris Yeltsin today at the Barvikha sanatorium outside Moscow.
After the encounter, Gore said Yeltsin "seemed to be in good health, relaxed, smiling." He said Yeltsin had been "actively engaged" in the subjects they discussed. Gore said these included Chechnya and the START-2 arms reduction treaty.
The meeting was originally supposed to take place in the Kremlin yesterday, but it was postponed after Yeltsin went to the Barvikha sanatorium to start a two-week vacation. Yeltsin press secretary Sergei Medvedev said yesterday that Yeltsin was "very tired" after the recent presidential campaign and needed a rest.
Prime Minister Viktor Chernomyrdin also attended today's meeting. He and Gore are currently chairing the seventh session of their joint commission on economics and technology.
