Bucharest, 2 September 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Romania's ruling Social Democratic Party (PDSR) said today it was splitting with the nationalist National Unity Party (PUNR), following recent sharp disagreement between the two parties over Romania's Hungary policy.
The breakup means the Social Democratic Party has lost its last coalition ally within the government. But observers say the break, viewed by many as a political move before Romania's November presidential elections, is not expected to affect the government's stability.
