Tallinn, 23 October 1996 (RFE/RL) -- Estonian President Lennart Meri and his wife have arrived in Latvia on a state visit, the first such visit since the re-establishment of the Baltic countries' independence.
During the visit, Latvian President Guntis Ulmanis is expected to decorate Meri with Latvia's highest state award, the Three Star Order Class One. According to the Latvian press, Meri will also decorate Ulmanis with an order.
Meri is also scheduled to meet with Latvian Prime Minister Andris Skele, pay a visit to the Latvian parliament and lay flowers at the Freedom Monument in Central Riga.
Yesterday, "The Latvian Press" reported that Meri's visit to Latvia so soon after his re-election last month is a clear sign of good relations between the two countries. Meri is scheduled to return to Tallinn late Friday.
