Moldova: Russian And Moldovan Border Guards Agree On Cooperation


Prague, 19 June 1997 (RFE/RL) -- Moldovan and Russian border troops yesterday initialed an accord and three protocols on cooperation between their troops.

The initalling took place at the end of a two-day visit to Chisinau by the commander of Russian border troops, General Andrei Nikolaev and his Moldovan counterpart, General Vasile Calmoi. The documents must now be endorsed by Moldovan and Russian presidents Petru Lucinschi and Boris Yeltsin.

The accord provides for cooperation in information exchange, the search for offenders and mutual technical assistance. Nikolaev said that although the two countries have no common border, they must cooperate in fighting illegal migration, smuggling and particularly arms and drug trafficking. During his visit he met President Lucinschi, prime minister Ion Ciubuc, Defense Minister Valeriu Pasat and Security Minister Tudor Botnaru.
