Belgrade, 21 July 1997 (RFE/RL) - Our correspondent in Serbia and independent media report that authorities have closed down six small private radio stations and two television channels in the southern Serbian town of Kraljevo.
Independent radio B92 in Belgrade says inspectors of the federal Telecommunications Ministry began closing the stations and confiscating their equipment on Friday and finished on Sunday.
The stations, which carried mostly local news on limited facilities, were closely allied with the Serbian opposition that rules Kraljevo. However, control of the press falls under Socialist-ruled jurisdiction.
Western leaders have repeatedly warned Serbian authorities about their harsh treatment of independent media.
