Moscow, 17 July 2000 (RFE/RL) -- Prominent Russian businessman Boris
Berezovsky is quoted as saying today that he plans to step
down as a deputy in Russia's parliament because he does not want
to be a part of the rebirth of an authoritarian regime.
Interfax news agency quotes Berezovsky as saying he plans to ask the speaker of the State Duma lower house to accept his resignation on Wednesday.
Berezovsky, whose business interests range from cars to media, has criticised President Vladimir Putin's plans to rein in the country's powerful regional governors and Kremlin attacks on so-called "oligarchs" -- powerful business interests.
In another interview, with London's Financial Times, he has also accused the Kremlin of persecuting the rich.
