Yerevan, 6 March 2003 (RFE/RL) -- Robert Kocharian has been re-elected as president of Armenia. Election officials declared Kocharian the winner of the second round of the presidential election after counting 99 percent of the ballots today.
Hamlet Abrkhamyan, deputy chairman of the Central Election Commission, said Kocharian had 67.5 percent of the vote and challenger Stepan Demirchian had 32.5 percent.
But Demirchian campaign chief Grigor Arutyunian accused election officials of intimidating and removing opposition representatives from local election commissions.
International observer groups are to hold a news conference later today (11 a.m. Prague time) to report on their monitoring of the poll.
