Russia: Five Soldiers Killed In Ingushetia


Nazran, Russia; 30 July 2003 (RFE/RL) -- The prosecutor of the Sunzhenskii region in Ingushetia said today that five Russian soldiers were killed when their vehicle hit an improvised explosive. The explosion happened last night near the Ingush village of Galashkii near the border with Chechnya.

Prosecutor Gilani Merzhuev said all five of the soldiers were from Chechnya's capital Grozny. Merzhuev said investigators are at the scene looking for evidence.

There was also an attack on a border post along the Ingush-Chechen border overnight. Two policemen were wounded in that attack.

Meanwhile in Chechnya, federal forces said they killed two Chechen separatists and captured three others in fighting on the outskirts of the village of Alkhan-Hutor. Russia's regional center for antiterrorist operations in the North Caucasus said today federal forces near Alkhan-Hutor were seeking, and found, a Chechen separatist camp that federal troops destroyed.
