According to Finmarket on 3 May, Tatarstan's foreign trade turnover reached $3,2 billion in 2000, 80 percent higher than the year before. Exports were $2,8 billion while the imports were $362 million.

American Express Bank Ltd. executive director Jovan Kagninelli and AE Russian representation chief Katrin Tibo met the managers of Kazanskiy Commercial bank to discuss bilateral cooperation.

The Electropribor navigation equipment plant signed a multi-million dollar contract with Chinese Defense Ministry to provide upgrades for Su-27 air fighters, news agencies reported on 4 May.
Shaimiev Receives Tatar Scientist
President Mintimer Shaimiev received Mirza Makhmutov on the latter's 75th birthday, the government press service reported. Shaimiev thanked Makhmutov, a distinguished scientist who was among the founders of the Tatar-American Regional Institute, for his contributions to the intellectual life of the republic.
Chally Introduces Free Transport for Dacha Season
The Chally city administration introduced free public transport in suburban areas for pensioners, large families and the disabled traveling to their dachas for the summer period, "Vecherniye Chelni" reported on 4 May.

Private Businesses to Sponsor Satellite TV Project
The Kalinin region administration met with local businessmen to discuss financing the satellite television program. The businessmen have already raised 500,000 rubles ($17,200) for the project.
Floods Hit Ufa
More than 3,000 houses have been flooded near Ufa, aromi.ru reported on 3 May, but only 545 have been evacuated so far.
