MOSCOW -- Police in Moscow today detained 10 HIV-positive participants in an unsanctioned demonstration to mark World AIDS Day, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The protesters, who are from various Russian regions, congregated outside the government building holding placards demanding medical care. They said they want to alert government officials to the problems they face obtaining uninterrupted supplies of medication.

While official estimates put the number of HIV-infected in Russia at over 570,000, experts believe the real figure is likely twice that amount.
