Turkmenistan's parliament has passed a law that creates the basis for establishing new political parties.
Turkmen media reported on January 11 that the law defines the legal foundations for forming political entities, their rights and responsibilities, as well as guarantees for parties' activities.
It also regulates the relationship between parties and state bodies and other organizations.
The passage of the law comes just days after Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov pledged in a campaign speech that he would work to have a multiparty system in Turkmenistan -- where there is currently only one registered political party -- and allow independent media outlets to be registered.
