Reports from Iraq say more than 60 people have been killed in a series of attacks apparently targeting Shi’ite pilgrims in Baghdad and the central city of Hillah.
At least four bomb blasts were reported in Baghdad as Shi’a were gathering to visit a shrine to a revered imam as part of a major religious festival.
At least two bomb blasts were reported in Hillah, also apparently targeting Shi’ite pilgrims who were preparing to mark the anniversary of the death of Imam Musa al-Khadim, a great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Two blasts were also reported in the city of Balad, north of Baghdad.
Sunni Al-Qaeda militants have claimed responsibility for previous attacks targeting Iraq's majority Shi'a, who control the Iraqi government.
Another person was killed in the northern city of Kirkuk when three more bombs exploded, one of them outside the political office of a prominent ethnic Kurdish leader.
