CHISINAU -- Moldova is on track to initial an Association Agreement with the European Union at the bloc's Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius in November.
Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt and Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski made the announcement during a visit to the Moldovan capital, Chisinau, on October 22.
They added that the agreement should be finalized by next spring.
Sikorski called Moldova "a good example for other members of the Eastern Partnership to follow."
Bildt also criticized "threats against Moldova from other countries," an apparent reference to pressure from Russia aimed at blocking closer relations between Moldova and the EU.
EU Enlargment Commissioner Stefan Fuele, speaking to a session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, emphasized that closer relations with the EU would not infringe the sovereignty of Eastern Partnership countries.
The Eastern Partnership also includes Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, and Ukraine.
