The Pakistani Army says at least 18 militants were killed in the ongoing campaign against Taliban militants in North Waziristan tribal district.

The military said its planes on June 27 targeted militant strongholds outside Miranshah, the main town in the region bordering Afghanistan.

Tanks and artillery pounded suspected militant positions outside Miranshah early on June 28.

The military said a Tehrik-e Taliban (TTP) commander was killed while a "prominent" Al-Qaeda commander was captured while trying to flee.

The military says nearly 370 militants and 12 security personnel have been killed since the offensive against the militants in North Waziristan was launched on June 15.

Officials say nearly 500,000 people have fled the area.
