Ekho Moskvy Journalist Put On Leave Ahead Of Crucial Meeting

A radio host for Ekho Moskvy has been put on unpaid leave until December 7, ahead of a meeting on November 21 that could determine the future of one of Russia's last independent media outlets.

Editor in chief Aleksei Venediktov agreed to put Aleksandr Plyushchev on leave until a "labor inspection" of his firing was complete.

The host tweeted about the death of the Kremlin chief of staff Sergei Ivanov's son, which he has deleted and apologized for.

Plyushchev was fired by the head of the main shareholder of Ekho, Gazprom-Media, on November 6.

Gazprom-Media's head, Mikhail Lesin, admitted in an interview with Novaya Gazeta published on November 15 that the firing was illegal.

Ekho's board of directors are voting on November 21. Lesin said that the board will resolve the question over the legality of the firing.
