The spokesman for Russia's Investigative Committee, Vladimir Markin, says he "decided" to resign from his position.
Markin announced on September 21 that he had submitted his resignation letter to committee chief Aleksandr Bastrykin.
Markin said that he made the decision voluntarily, saying he wants to try himself in new activities.
Media reports said last week that Markin and Bastrykin were going to resign.
Kommersant newspaper reported that the Investigative Committee might be reorganized and added to a new official body -- the Ministry of State Security (MGB) that will also comprise the Federal Security Service, the External Intelligence Service, and structures of the Federal Guarding Service.
