VITEBSK -- Prominent Belarusian cyclist Zinaida Stahurskaya, 38, was killed in a traffic accident on June 25, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.
Stahurskaya was the world cycling champion in 2000.
Although she had been living in Italy in recent years, she arrived in Vitebsk a week ago to train for the upcoming national cycling championships.
She was struck by a car while riding behind her trainer's vehicle and killed on the spot.
An investigation is under way.
