Chinese Company Fires 10 Protesters In Turkmenistan

ASHGABAT -- Ten employees who led protests over late paychecks have been fired by the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation in northeastern Turkmenistan, RFE/RL’s Turkmen Service reports.

The employees were working illegally and were warned that they would lose their previous wages if they took their firings public.

In the autumn, employees protested the late payment of wages in front of company headquarters until police broke up the demonstration.

Experts say many such employees are working illegally and are obliged to work more than labor laws permit.
