Ill-Advised?

In an article called "David Plouffe And The Call Of Oil," Ken Silverstein of "Harper's Magazine" has harsh words for the Obama campaign manager's current visit to Azerbaijan, first reported by RFE/RL:

Plouffe was invited by a pro-government group headed up by hacks loyal to the regime. Whatever his motivation is, and I could make a pretty good guess, democracy in not high on the list.

Meanwhile, politico.com's Ben Smith quoted a Plouffe associate as saying that the "key, unpaid adviser to Obama for America" would be "speaking to university students 'about the 2008 election and the power of grassroots people to make change -- focusing on the role of younger voters. He'll be focusing on the power of democracy and what it means to people around the world.'"

About This Blog

Written by RFE/RL editors and correspondents, Transmission serves up news, comment, and the odd silly dictator story. While our primary concern is with foreign policy, Transmission is also a place for the ideas -- some serious, some irreverent -- that bubble up from our bureaus. The name recognizes RFE/RL's role as a surrogate broadcaster to places without free media. You can write us at transmission+rferl.org
