Kyrgyz Border Guards Released By Uzbeks

BISHKEK -- A Kyrgyz border official says two border guards detained by Uzbek police have been released, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

Cholponbek Turusbekov, the deputy head of the Kyrgyz border service, told RFE/RL that the border guards returned to their military unit on January 6.

Turusbekov said the incident that led to their detention is under investigation.

One preliminary report said the border guards were detained on January 2 in the Ala-Buka area of the Kyrgyz-Uzbek border after trying to steal a cow from a resident of an Uzbek village.

They were reportedly detained by local residents and taken to the Uzbek police department.
