BISHKEK -- Journalists from the Kyrgyz weekly "Achyk sayasat" (Open Politics) were summoned to the Prosecutor-General's Office and warned of the possible consequences of "insulting" President Kurmanbek Bakiev, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Opposition Ak-Shumkar party officials told RFE/RL that "Achyk sayasat" Deputy Editor in Chief Yryskeldi Mombekov and several of his colleagues were given oral and written warnings that they should be careful not to offend the president.
The written warning says that if the journalists continue writing articles deemed insulting or offensive to Bakiev, they will be "punished in accordance with Kyrgyzstan's laws."
The presidential election is scheduled for July 23.
