Gazprom – the Russian energy giant at the heart of Moscow’s gas wars with its western neighbors – has its own anthem. In fact, it’s a drinking song, accompanied by a video that intercuts shots of sunrise on the tundra with stolid gas workers toiling over the pipelines.
A YouTube user has kindly added English subtitles:
Let's drink to you, let's drink to us
Let's drink to all the Russian gas
And to those extracting the new sun
From underneath the ground.
The Gazprom anthem is apparently meant in earnest, unlike this song by a Russian theater troupe -- more tongue-in-cheek but equally topical -- in which Russia threatens to cut off the gas whenever Europe gets out of line.
