UFA, Bashkortostan -- Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) detained World Bashkir Congress (Kurultay) Deputy Chairman Fanzil Akhmetshin on July 19, RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir and Kazakh services report.
World Bashkir Congress Chairman Azamat Galin told RFE/RL that Akhmetshin, who is also the leader of the congress's youth organization, was detained as a
witness in the case of an attempted bombing of a natural gas pipeline in Bashkortostan.
Security forces found a bomb several weeks ago along a pipeline in Bashkortostan and began an investigation into the case. No further details were available.
