JALAL-ABAD, Kyrgyzstan -- About 150 protesters have gathered in front of the building of the regional administration in the southern Kyrgyz city of Jalal-Abad to demand the immediate release of former Defense Minister Bakyt Kalyev, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.
Kalyev was arrested on April 15, immediately after ousted President Kurmanbek Bakiev left the country for neighboring Kazakhstan.
Kyrgyzstan's interim government arrested Kalyev for his alleged role in giving the command to open fire on pro-opposition protesters on April 7 during clashes between opposition supporters and Kyrgyz police and security forces in Bishkek.
At least 84 people were killed and over 1,000 injured.
