UTMANKHEL, Pakistan -- Taliban militants destroyed five schools in the Utmankhel area of the Orakzai tribal region in northwestern Pakistan on March 31, RFE/RL's Radio Mashaal reports.
The schools were in the Spin Kada, Dhand Garhi, and Shalon Talab districts. A local health care center was also burned down.
The Taliban opposes education for girls and often destroy schools that girls attend.
The Orakzai tribal area -- which is near the Pakistani-Afghan border -- has been destabilized by the arrival of Taliban militants fleeing the Pakistani government's recent military operations against them in Waziristan Province.
