TBILISI (RFE/RL) -- Thousands of protesters in the Georgian capital have demanded the release of opposition activists, RFE/RL's Georgian Service reports.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the Georgian Interior Ministry building.

They insist that at least 28 opposition activists have been detained by Georgian law enforcement officers in the last several weeks.

On June 6, an activist of the opposition Democratic Movement for a United Georgia party, Gocha Tsiklauri, was detained for alleged illegal gun possession.

His colleagues call the arrest politically motivated.

Another opposition activist, Levan Terashvili of the For A United Georgia party, was detained in the city of Gori on June 7.
